diamonds

Diamonds are not only a woman's best friend, they are also the most precious gem and the most widely used in jewellery. Strict regulation of the market has meant that diamonds have also become a great safe haven in these recent years of extreme volatility for classic investments.

However, it is very important to be able to trust the retailer and the quality certificate accompanying the gem.

For this purpose Ferdinando Veronesi & Figli only works with internationally certified bodies and has an in-house, equipped gemological laboratory.

Classification of Diamonds

Diamonds carats

CARAT WEIGHT:

The carat is a unit of weight, it is indicated as "ct" and represents one fifth of a gram. One carat is equivalent, therefore, to 0.20 g.

In a well-cut diamond there are, as we have seen, fixed ratios to determine a relationship between the diameter and the weight (carats) of the stone.

COLOUR:

The colour saturation is expressed by a letter. The pure white diamond is identified with the letter D.

The complete colour scale is:

D - E - F - G - H - I - J - K - L - M - N - O - P - Q - R - S - T - U - V - Z

PURITY:

It expresses the number and size of the inclusions contained in the diamond when observed by an experienced operator with a lens that magnifies ten times.

The full purity scale is:

IF (puro alla lente) - VVS - VS - SI - P1 - P2 - P3

PROPORTIONALITY:

The cut of the diamond has been designed to maximise the brilliance of the gem. The proportions of all parts must comply with strict coded percentages.

The cutting scale judgement is:

EXCELLENT - VERY GOOD - GOOD - UNUSUAL

SYMMETRY AND FINISH:

Every single facet in the cut of the diamond should be finished perfectly.

The judgement scale is equal to that of the cut:

EXCELLENT - VERY GOOD - GOOD - UNUSUAL

When a round cut diamond maximises the perfect proportions, finish and symmetry, a particular optical effect occurs:

The gem observed with a visora displays a shadow play that creates 8 hearts and 8 arrows.

This example of excellence in the round diamond cut is called  HEARTS and ARROWS
